This summer marked a meaningful milestone for Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute d/b/a Ahimsa Peace Institute as the first offering of Gandhian Studies: Roots of Relationship was presented through the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).
The ten-week course explores the lessons Mahatma Gandhi shared with his grandson, Arun Gandhi, on building healthy relationships through the practice of nonviolence. Together, participants examine the five Roots of Relationship: Love, Respect, Understanding, Appreciation, and Acceptance and how these values can be applied in everyday life.
Sixteen students registered for the inaugural course, creating a vibrant learning community committed to personal growth. Through stories from the Gandhi family, journaling practices, videos, discussion, and experiential activities, participants have been exploring how small daily choices influence relationships within families, workplaces, communities, and the wider world.
Now approximately halfway through the course, the class has engaged with the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Arun Gandhi, including the Nonviolent Tree, the Roots of Relationship, and practical tools for cultivating greater awareness, compassion, and constructive action. The conversations have been thoughtful, heartfelt, and inspiring, demonstrating that the principles of nonviolence remain as relevant today as ever.
Building on the success of the summer course, a second offering in the Gandhian Studies series will be presented during the Fall 2026 semester:
Gandhian Studies: Gandhi’s Journey, India, South Africa and Nonviolence
This course will follow Gandhi’s life journey from India to South Africa and back to India, exploring the experiences, relationships, and historical events that shaped the development of satyagraha, nonviolence, and constructive action. Participants will also examine the continuing relevance of Gandhian principles in addressing contemporary challenges and building a more peaceful world.
The Gandhian Studies series reflects the ongoing mission of Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute and Ahimsa Peace Institute to share practical tools for peacebuilding, personal transformation, and compassionate living through the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Arun Gandhi.
As Arun Gandhi often reminded us, lasting change begins close to home, one person, one relationship, and one community at a time.
