The Light He Left for Us
For Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Nonviolence
October 2, 2026 — 157th Anniversary of the Birth of Mahatma Gandhi
A child was born beneath India’s sky,
with no great trumpet sounding.
No one could know how far his steps
would travel round the world.
He learned that strength need not be loud,
that courage need not wound,
that truth could stand with empty hands
and still transform the world.
He called upon the best in us
to answer hate with love,
to meet injustice without hatred,
and raise humanity above.
He taught that how we live together
begins with how we see
with love, respect, and understanding
for all humanity.
With appreciation for each other,
acceptance opening the way,
these roots make relationships stronger
through the choices made each day.
And when his footsteps left the earth,
his journey did not end.
The light passed on from heart to heart,
from stranger unto friend.
Through children learning how to care,
through hands that choose to serve,
through every voice that speaks the truth
with dignity and nerve.
His legacy belongs to all
who choose the gentler way
not only on his birthday,
but in how we live each day.
So, on this Gandhi Jayanti,
let children everywhere know:
these roots are held within your hands,
and yours to help them grow.
For Gandhi left no crown to wear,
no kingdom to defend.
He left a simple question
for each generation:
How will you carry peace forward?
Where will your courage start?
Perhaps the world that Gandhi dreamed
begins within your heart.
On this Gandhi Jayanti, Gandhi’s legacy reminds us that peace is not simply something we hope for; it is something we nurture through the relationships we create each day. Love, Respect, Understanding, Appreciation, and Acceptance are the Roots of Relationship, grounding children in the values that allow peace to grow within families, communities, and across the world.
