Celebrating the 61st Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” Speech
August 28, 1963
August 28, 2024, marks the 61st anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered during the March on Washington in 1963. This powerful call for civil rights and social justice has inspired generations to continue the fight for equality through nonviolent means.
To honor this milestone, we are excited to announce a special online screening of the documentary “Ahimsa—Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless,” which will be available from September 28 to October 4, 2024. The screening will be followed by a live virtual panel discussion on October 5, 2024, featuring distinguished speakers who will explore the relevance of nonviolence in today’s world.
Why This Event Matters
Martin Luther King Jr. was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of Ahimsa, or nonviolent resistance. Gandhi’s teachings provided a framework for King’s own approach to social change and civil rights in the United States. As we reflect on the legacy of Dr. King’s speech, we are reminded of the power of peaceful resistance in achieving lasting societal transformation.
The documentary “Ahimsa—Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless” captures the essence of Gandhi’s philosophy and its global impact. The film includes rare archival footage and insightful commentary that shed light on how nonviolence has been used as a powerful tool for change across various movements worldwide, including the American Civil Rights Movement led by Dr. King.
